It is hard to believe that we are coming up to our first anniversary in our new Washington, DC location at 5215 Wisconsin Avenue but even more astonishing is that this June will mark the 30th anniversary of the Kellogg Collection. We are so thankful to our loyal customers and thrilled to have so many new ones. Please stop by during the sale, we look forward to seeing you.

Highpoint – Spring 2012

What a whirlwind trip to Highpoint this year, literally.  The wind was strong enough to turn umbrellas inside out.  And trying to cover Highpoint in two days is a challenge.  But we found great new things for the store.

These new pillows will look great with our cotton rugs and new dhurris.   Perfect for summer.

The accessories were wonderful too.  Add one or two (or all of these) to a bookshelf or coffee table and you are all set to go.

We also found some terrific mirrors and prints.

This was my favorite:

This artwork will add character to any space.

How about these yummy antique oushaks, we purchased them to upholster benches – always so special and unique.  One of a kind rugs make a real statement.

And I love the lines of this new sofa,  a great addition to our already large line of Lee upholstery.

We found a great line of furniture that is so much fun and will add a punch of color to any room.  And who couldn’t use the extra seating these cubes provide?

Finally, we came across a new line of hand-crafted metal furnishings made in Alabama!  They are so versatile and customizable I can’t wait to get them in.

Highpoint is one of the highlights of the year for me.  I love finding new things to integrate into our collection and share with our customers.

Stop by and see the great new things from Highpoint.

1 Room: 3 Floor Plans

One of the challenges in interior design is figuring out the puzzle of space planning.  Every client is different and wants the space to function to their specific needs.  It could be a large family that wants a casual room with lots of seating or a single person that wants a room to be intimate for everyday use but also have the ability to entertain occasionally.

To start, a good rule of thumb is to use the fireplace or a window as the focal point in the room.    For upholstery, we recommend sofas paired with chairs or even two separate sofas as opposed to large sectionals which are harder to work with because they are very limiting on how you can plan the space. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to float furniture!  It will create more defined spaces and purpose within the room.

Some ‘must-have’ objects may also be a challenge for some to incorporate into a room like the huge flat screen television, or the beautiful piano that has been in your family for years.   For many, the television becomes the focal point because it is used so often, but it does not have to appear that way.  Placing it near a window or fireplace, or hiding it in an armoire, may do the trick of keeping the room balanced and aesthetically pleasing.

Here are some examples on how 1 room can be transformed into 3 different floor plans:

If you need lots of seating, you can treat a large room as one space with a custom cut sisal or wool area rug and lots of different seating options with sofas, club chairs, ottomans and side chairs to pull into the space when needed

You may want to separate the room to function for different activities. As you can see, having 2 separate area rugs will help separate the space visually and allow for an intimate seating area as well as a game table or dining area in the other half of the room.

In this example we can address the challenge of the piano and TV. Separating the space gives the piano a place to shine rather than making it look like it was forced into the room. Adding a small seating area gathered in front of the piano creates a story or 'music area' and gives the piano purpose in the room. The TV is placed between the fireplace and window and therefore the seating arrangement makes sense.

If you ever have any questions or challenges on space planning in your own home, stop in any one of our 5 shops and we will be glad to help!  If you have a larger project, feel free to contact one of our designers: email designers@kelloggcollection.com or call 202-363-3165.

Spring Upholstery Sale

While Spring came early this year due to the warmest March ever in Washington, for many this will be remembered as the winter that wasn’t. March went out like a lamb and early April reminds, and always surprises us of the beauty that this city is in springtime.

Tucker Chair

This is also the same time of year that the Kellogg Collection has its annual spring upholstery sale. With all the bursting colors outside thoughts turn to brightening up our interiors. This year the sale runs from April 6th through the 30th with savings on all upholstery and fabric. In stock items and special orders will be reduced 25%  to 30% and fabric orders will be 20% off their regular price. This includes all Sofas, Loveseats, Chairs. Ottomans and Benches.

The Process

The word Upholstery comes from the olde English word Upholder which referred to tradesman who held up his goods. A person who works with upholstery is an upholsterer: an apprentice upholsterer is sometimes called an outsider or trimmer.

Margate Sofa

While we have lost many manufacturing jobs over the past few years and when so many of our purchases are items made abroad, it is comforting; both mentally and more importantly physically, that your sofa or club chair is an all American made product.

For many people the purchase of upholstered furniture is a big expense and can be a daunting one. Here at the Kellogg Collection our staff is trained to assist you so in picking just the right fabric and chair design that you will enjoy for years to come.

Wheelback

Our loyal customers know that there are many options available to achieve the look and comfort they are seeking. The Kellogg Collection creates many signature pieces that are for sale right off the floor with delivery included for most of our neighbors. This is also a great opportunity to create unique upholstered furniture that is yours and yours alone. We have a wide selection of fabrics to choose from and our customers can bring their own material in as well. We have the expertise to assist you every step of the way.

Tray Chic!

An assortment of seasonal gift trays.

Often, customers inquire about our selection of trays in various shapes and sizes. It’s an accessory that I think is frequently overlooked but one that can serve many different functions.  It can be given as an unexpected housewarming gift, used as your all-purpose serving tray, or placed on a coffee table to unite a group of small, related items.

The mirrored geometric tray...reminiscent of a classic greek key design.

Our mango wood tray...perfect for an ottoman.

A mutli-toned bone design for a modern twist.

Recently, we’ve brought in some interesting tables that include tray tops as the key feature of their design. This butler tray in a tortoise bamboo finish would make excellent serving table for cool refreshments at a beach house, while the painted option might be better suited for a more feminine bedroom. This black painted console with a removable tray top (shown below, also available in a coffee table) is a unique addition to a living room or dining room and can be dressed up or down depending on the furniture it is paired with.

Finally, people often look to create some sort of bar area within the home; however, they may not have the space or they may not want to make the investment required to build a bar.  If this is you, a bar cart may be your answer because it provides a flexible solution to a problem area.  For example, when not in use, store the bar cart against a wall in your dining room. Once you are entertaining guests, the caster wheels allow easy transport to any room in the house. Accessorize with antique crystal decanters, multi-colored bottles, some fun cocktail glasses and a vase of flowers to add a hint of softness.

As the summer months quickly approach, more and more people journey outside the home to visit friends and relatives, attend a housewarming party, or host a holiday gathering. Why not gift a tray? It is unexpected, multi-functional, classic–an item nobody ever knows they need.

Entertaining 101: Easter Brunch

Daylight savings time has finally arrived which means we have officially sprung forward and are excited for the longer days, blooming plant life, and warmer weather which always brings out the social side in all of us.  Easter is just around the corner and a wonderful time to spend with family and friends.  It is also the first excuse of the spring season to entertain!

For some of us, entertaining may not come easy. You might be wondering: where do I start?  First – get organized! Organization is key to throwing an excellent party or even a small get-together.  Make check-lists:  meal plan, guest list, party decorations, budget, etc.  If everything is organized from the start, you will feel less stressed and be able to enjoy the festivities for yourself.

For a family gathering, like Easter brunch, its also nice to get the kids involved.  Be creative and make your own menus and fun place cards.  The kids can help decorate and will be happy to participate!

You can also get creative with the table setting.  Use jelly beans, peeps, or any colorful candy of your choice as an inexpensive way to decorate. Why not use the eggs collected from the kids’ Easter egg hunt as a fun centerpiece?  Pair these items with beautiful hurricanes or a floral arrangement to complete the table.

The Kellogg Collection has several styles of hurricanes available

Kellogg also offers a wide selection of baskets, trays, and other accessories that you can use for your table centerpieces

Another fun and inexpensive craft: cut out and string together paint samples for a colorful Easter decoration

For a more sophisticated look, a simple floral arrangement for a centerpiece will always look nice. You can also mix different flatware as a point of interest.

Easter usually involves a lot of family tradition and with tradition usually comes good food!  These hot ham and cheese sliders are delicious and perfect for a brunch buffet.  I would like to share my grandmother’s recipe — a comfort food for all to enjoy!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup soft butter
2 teaspoons yellow mustard
1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
2 teaspoons poppy seed
 Thin ham slices
Thin Swiss cheese slices
Small buns or party bread
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Thoroughly mix together mayo, butter, mustard, onion and poppy seed.  Spread mixture on top and bottom of bun/sandwich.
Put 1 slice of ham and 1 slice of cheese in each bun/sandwich.
Wrap group of buns in aluminum foil.
Place in 350 degree oven for 10 minutes or until cheese melts.
Makes about  24 mini sliders (or 12 regular sized sandwiches).
Can be made days ahead and frozen; reheat in oven until cheese melts.
Happy Spring and Happy Easter to you and yours!

Moroccan Berber Wool and Silk Rugs

Beginning Friday March 9th, and running until the 24th, we will be having a special sale on all of our rugs.  All five of our stores are participating in this event. During this period all rugs will be discounted 20%  with additional markdowns for our Aubusson, Needlepoint and Asmara Oushak rugs.

The highlight of this event will be the selection of just arrived Moroccan Berber Wool and Silk Rugs. Our buyers visited Morocco recently and discovered a wonderful trove of beautiful tribal rugs in a wide variety of colors, styles and sizes.

Morocco is the farthest west of the North African countries. It has a population of around 35 million people. Sixty percent of Morrocans identify themselves as Berbers. Historically, the Berbers were and are a nomadic people who criss-crossed the Morrocan Sahara Desert. The rugs you will find in our stores are their creations.

Welcome to Morocco

Beautiful Blue

These rugs are the result of a single individual who spent many hours working in primitive conditions to create textiles of great beauty and range. The designs most often identify the tribe and area of the country where they were made. These rugs or textiles were multi-funtional and were used as blankets, tablecloths and even luggage.

A Faded Beauty

None of the rugs are “antique,” meaning less than 100 years old; nor are they new. The allure of these rugs is not in their age but rather in their stunning beauty and magnificent workmanship.

A Patchwork Example

No two rugs are the same and we have acquired them in a multiple range of sizes. They come in sizes from a small 2×3 area rug to some unusually long runners. When we opened the rugs upon their arrival here at the stores there were many “oohs and ahhs” and we think you will come away with the same impression.

A Rich Red Tribal Rug

This special collection is but part of our beautiful selection of rugs. As always you’ll find everything from magnificent Needlepoints to sophisticated American made Rag rugs. We look forward to seeing you!

Aubusson Rugs in Downton Abbey

If you’re a fan of Downton Abbey, you will enjoy this blog post by Asmara about the Aubusson rugs that are featured in the show.
